Clothing

Whether your having one or both of your legs lengthened, your going to have to think about clothing.  You can add extra fabric to your pants and put zippers, snaps, or velcro down the side. If you are having your lower leg done you can cut off the end of your pants and put zippers, velcro, or snaps if its easier.  I found it easier to have the end cut off of my pants but its not always warmer. Just think, after you can get new clothes!

And yes, if you are having your leg lengthened you have to think about your underwear!  Not all underwear can fit over some of the frames.  You could buy stretchy underwear, put snaps, or put velcro.  I recommend snaps for the underwear because its quicker and more comfortable.

Here's a list of things you might need to think about:

  • pants/shorts
  • socks
  • underwear
  • shoes
  • pajama pants

  Keeping your leg warm

If you are having your lower leg done and have decided that you are going to cut the bottom half of your pant leg off, then you need to think of how you are going to keep your leg warm. You could either make something to cover the whole frame and all or if you know someone that's crafty with the sowing machine you could pick out some of your favorite fabric and they can sew a leg warmer type thing to come around and through the pins/wires with velcro.

    Getting around

If you are having surgery on your leg, though walking is important, until you get used to having a clunky robot type thing on your leg you could rent a wheelchair so when you are going places that are long distances you could go for a ride.  For the first few weeks after surgery, it is also helpful to have a walker and crutches.  You can rent those as well.
